When companies innovate and adapt their business model to incorporate environmental benefits, they might not always succeed in generating financing for these innovations or production changes. Conventional financing practices do not view such strategies favorably, with the possible exception of real estate financing. For this reason, new modes of financing must be invented along with a set of appropriate measurement indicators. In Canada, the province of Ontario has launched an online platform for local companies making tangible social or environmental contributions to access sources of private investment capital. In Belgium, a management company is seeking to combine social benefits with financial performance, and the United Arab Emirates are looking closely at the feasibility of “green building” construction programs.
